But just because technology is making it easier and quicker for us to reach and recruit candidates, doesnât mean it should remove the human element from the recruitment process. CV scanning software is being introduced as an alternative for recruiterâs to manage the hundreds of applications submitted, removing the need for as much manual reviewing. However, these systems could sometimes be resulting in suitable candidates being discounted. Hereâs why you shouldnât rely entirely on CV scanning software to find the best candidates for your roles. 1. Strong candidates can have bad CVs A CV offers an insight into a candidateâs experiences and marketable skills, but itâs never possible to employ based on a CV alone. A candidate who lacks the ability to produce a CV that would get them through a CV scanning software vetting process could still have the expertise to excel in a role. An applicant may struggle to tailor their CV and add relevant keywords that a CV scanning software will be detecting. This could be because they have either not needed to produce a CV for a long time (for example, a candidate who had a long-term position) or they donât have the necessary CV writing skills. These applicants could still match your employerâs specification and therefore be incorrectly declined. More experienced candidates who have had long-term positions often struggle to display their relevant experiences and skills in their CV, especially those who were recruited before a CV becoming standard practice. CV scanning systems assess the quality of a CV whereas a more personal review will allow you to weigh up their suitability for a role beyond a bad CV. 2. Keywords can vary dramatically Keywords will vary between industries and sectors and can even differ in each company, searching based on an exact list may remove candidates who are using other synonyms or acronyms. As a recruiter reviewing a CV, youâll be able to recognize these differences and ascertain which candidates best match your clientâs specification, without avoiding a candidate merely due to their usage of different terminology. 3. You need to look beyond the CV A recruiterâs role is to discover talent and the ability to assess whether a candidate will fit with an existing team, be a value to a company and perform well in a role goes beyond what is written in an applicantâs CV. The goalposts can move The recruitment market is continuously changing meaning the availability of candidates can directly reflect your clientâs specifications and requirements. As it becomes more difficult to recruit, your client may adjust the skills or qualities they expect from a potential candidate. CV scanning systems wonât give you the ability to react and adjust in accordance to your clientâs demands. As a recruiter you should be aware of the recruitment market, understanding the availability of candidates and the skill set currently assessable from your available talent pool. Individually reviewing CVs, allows you to bring forward to a clientâs attention candidates that donât tick all the criteria areas but have the right foundation. This is an essential part of recruitment if you discover that finding an applicant who fits all aspects of the clientâs requirements wonât be possible. CV scanning systems might be declining candidates who you may need to revert to if unable to fill based on the current list of essentials. As a recruiter, you have the ability and experience to quickly identify suitable candidates and match applicants to your clientâs requirements. By using CV scanning systems, you may be narrowing your talent pool through discounting candidates unnecessarily based on them not fitting into a restrictive set of rules. 5 Ways To Conquer Overwhelm in Your Job Search Overwhelm is the most common battle job searchers face. Where do you even start? Do you update your resume, sign up for a networking event, or search for jobs online? You surely cant do everything at once, especially if you are job searching while still working a full-time job. I know what it is like because I have been there. I was often overwhelmed by all of the job search sites, networking events, and people that I wanted to meet and I barely had any free time on my hands to devote to job searching. If you are overwhelmed or scared to fail, here are some suggestions to help you conquer overwhelm and find you dream job. 5 Ways To Conquer Overwhelm in Your Job Search 1) Pace Yourself Take your job search step-by-step. A lot of stress reduction comes down to setting realistic goals and incorporating them into your daily routine. Assuming that you already have a to-do list, pick out the one item you most dread doing thatâs your first priority for the day. Once youâve finished the activity that you most dread, the rest of your goals for that day will be a little easier to achieve. You can only do one thing at a time and, eventually, everything worthwhile will get done. I often ask myself, What is the most important thing I can do right now? Do you need to be doing everything or can you focus only on the most important things in your life and career and say no to everything else? I once had a client that was volunteering for everything she could. Yes, it will look great on her resume but if her goal is to make a career transition in the next three months, she needs to focus on doing that first. Also, dont forget what can be accomplished if you simply wake up a bit earlier. Have some quiet time and drink your coffee. The worst thing for overwhelm is to spend your day rushing from one thing to the next. Youâre not a superhero, and you canât do everything all at once, no matter how hard you try. 2) Learn to Say No No one will hate you. Itâs ok to say no. I have a client whose boss keeps having her do his work for him. Before she could actually have the time to job search and get her career unstuck, she needed to clear the tasks on her plate and stop doing his work. I know it is sometimes hard to say no because we want others to like us. But, you have to practice it and think about how important your time really is. You need to set boundaries for yourself. When you do turn down the request, keep your no short; something along the lines of Id really love to, but I cant. The more wiggle room you give, the more ammo the other person has to attempt to change your mind. Never apologize and dont dwell on it or feel guilty. This will get easier with time I promise! Once you see how much more control you now have over your life, saying no will become second nature. Other tips for saying no are to tell your boss that you can help him later when things calm down. Or ask him to prioritize your tasks for you. Let your boss know that you already have too much on your plate and you want to do things well so you need his help. 3) Be OK With Your Path No one is perfect and each of us has our own unique journey to finding our ideal career path. For me, it was an over four-year journey. Donât judge yourself. We are often our worst critics. Donât think you have to be like everyone elseâs path. Your path is unique and will be different. There is no âperfect timeline.â You are on the RIGHT PATH! Even if you feel like it is taking way too long. I spoke to a client last week who was worried because her search was taking too long. She had gone through my get unstuck coaching system and was close to finishing. She had targeted a career field and then realized that the career she thought she wanted to go into wasnât the right fit for her. She was feeling really frustrated by it but I told her that it was actually a GOOD thing! She was right on track because she was narrowing career fields down and wouldnt end up in a career field that wasnât a good fit for her. Everyoneâs journey is different. You canât compare yourself to anyone else. 4) Donât Talk About Your Job Search with Everyone Remember, you donât have to talk to everyone about your job search plans. Another one of my clients recently told me that after a big blowout with her dad who didnât agree with her career choices, she said she realized that she should only talk to her career coach about her career. Some people will build us up and some people will bring us down. You donât have to share everything with everyone. Surround yourself with people that are positive and bring out the best in you. Find people to add to your network that inspire you and believe in your career goals and dreams. [RELATED: How To Job Search With Social Media] 5) Re-Connect With the Present Moment When I am overwhelmed, I just focus on my breathing and being mindful for two minutes. Just focus on the in and out breathing, and nothing else. By bringing your awareness back to the present moment, you realize that youâre doing the best you can under the current circumstances. Close your eyes and breath or try yoga or meditating. Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.â â" Buddha Most of us live in either the past or in the future. We regret what weâve done (or not done), or we worry about whatâs to come. There are no problems in the present. You are okay right now. You have a roof over your head, you have food in the fridge, and you feel fine. Stop living in the future. Your stress and blood pressure build as you think about everything you need to accomplish. Too much to do and too little time. This is what happens when youâre living in the future. You think and stress about all the things that need to be done in the future. Fears of not being able to get the job you want, not reaching your career goals, and disappointing others will haunt you. Let it go. You are on the right path. What do you think? Before picking up a book and reading it, do you really know the author? I bet more than half the time you have never experienced the author in reality. You may have searched their name in Google, found a Wikipedia entry on them or their own blog, but honestly, do you know them? Why do people go through the trouble of purchasing books? They want to feel a connection and be exposed to a celebrity or industry thought leader. They know the person and want to pay homage to their brand. They have a problem and they feel that the book will help them solve that problem. They have genuine interest in the topic and consider the book as different than others in its class. They are traveling and need a quick fix and books are convenient (airports, etc). What will paper books always lack? A visual touch point, where you see, hear and feel the power of the author in front of you. Some authors dont know how to solve this and a lot of businesspeople dont consider one of the most rapidly growing media in the world today, video. A book might be great at spreading influence and position you as an expert in your field, but nothing can replace a real life experience with the author. As I write my own book, I always tell the publisher The book is part of me, and Im the brand behind the book. When you listen to an author giving a speech or workshop through video, you already feel like you know them. Then you are more inclined to purchase their book. Let me draw your attention to Michael Port, author of Book Yourself Solid and the upcoming Beyond Booked Solid book. Michael approached me and sent me a pre-release copy of his book. I didnt really know him, so I Googled his name and started looking through all his material. I came across information highlighting his books, notables in the Wall Street Journal and the fact that hes consulted over 20,000 business owners in the last two years. He brands himself as an actor and speaker. He was an actor on TV and film, with projects such as Sex and the City and All My Children. Aside from listing all of these accomplishments, the real thrill and feeling I had was watching one of his many YouTube videos. After starring at them for all of 15 minutes, I felt like I already knew him. THAT IS THE POWER IN VIDEO!
